This book stands alone and don't ask me if I have a favorite between the two because I couldn't pick. I love them both. In my opinion, that's one of the things that makes Chisnell's books so awesome. In the character of Janac, he's unmerciful. Could an entire series of books be based on a "bad guy" character like Janac?

After reading this book, I certainly think so! The ocean is a big place and anyone who might be able to help provided a person was able to call for help is likely to be hours away. A lot can happen in that amount of time. To me, there would be nothing more terrifying that running into the wrong people in the middle of the ocean, and yet that's exactly where Phil Hamnet runs into him.
Chisnell knows his setting well and he uses it to construct a psychological thriller that kept me chewing my fingernails from start to finish. Absolutely a must-read for lovers of psychological thrillers. I do recommend reading The Defector first, only because it's such a good read AND it sets up the character of Janac, not because it's necessary.

I'll say the same thing now that I did a couple years ago when I stumbled across them as giveaways on Smashwords: these books are worth paying for. Drug warlord Janac has turned to piracy to fund his battle for control of the Australian narcotics trade.
When he attacks the MV Shawould on an evil night in the South China Sea, it seems he has also found the perfect next victim for his psychotic games. Phil Hamnet and his wife Anna are taking a last voyage on his cargo ship before the impending birth of their twins. Phil escapes the pirate attack, but Anna is taken hostage to prevent him from revealing the pirate operation to the authorities. Janac puts Phil to the ultimate test: will he sacrifice Anna and the children to save the lives of unknown sailors?
And if not, then just how many ships and deaths will it take to make him reconsider.

It's an awful decision for anyone to have to make, but for a man who's already had to make it once before - in a lifeboat, adrift in the vastness of the Pacific - it's a living nightmare. You will find yourself sitting on the edge of your chair, and be totally wrapped up in the adventure. A definate 5 Star rating. Dec 01, Thomas Devine rated it liked it. Picked this book up at a book sale and noticed afterwards that it was published in New Zealand in with a different cover. It was good to find a thriller published locally where the publishing scene seems mostly literary and children's works.
Maybe if I'd read the prequel, Janec, the villain, might have seemed a less superficial character. Still, the plot has you sympathise with the hero? Phillip Hamnet difficult surname and gets you hoping he can save his wife, then himself, then his newborn children. Left wondering though if Hamnet would not have ended up in jail in real life, but that's thrillers for you. Not easy to put down - recommended as a worthwhile read. A very gritty adventure read, emphasis on "gritty. Janac, the villian, is truly villainous, yet he also came across as real. Mark Chisnell, author, is good.
He kept my interest throughout and I liked, really liked the ending. Apr 05, LAWonder10 rated it liked it. This was an action packed bitter-sweet story. It is a story of love, devotion, friendship, brutality, piracy, deceit. It is very suspenseful.
I could not put it down until the very end. I was disappointed on the ending. It was weak and left one wondering - "What happened next? There was some profanity and graphic violence. I would not recommend it to YA. I really enjoyed reading this book.

The story is fascinating and the characters are well done. At times I could envision being there as the scenes were so well written. The travel descriptions are very interesting. I felt bad for the protagonist because of his losses! May 19, Cathy rated it really liked it. Great story, had me hooked early on and I just kept reading. I don't think I'd go back and read the first Janac book - I don't really want to explore his character any further.
I don't feel like I missed anything jumping straight into book 2. Nov 15, Robert rated it it was ok. Good idea, good book, but poor ending.
